(5 sent. minimum) Lesson Plan for "Active Read-aloud" AKA Thought-squares - Hatchet Objective: To engage students in an active reading strategy to increase comprehension Materials: Book(In this case, Hatchet) or class set, paper or small white-boards Opening: Tell students that they will be learning an active reading strategy called Thought-squares - Instruct them to divide their paper into 4 squares. Explain that at different points in the reading, you will give them a cue about what to do during the class read-aloud. Begin reading Hatchet Ch.9. When Brian hears the noise from within his shelter at night, model an "I wonder" question, then instruct the students to draw a simple prediction of what could be making the noise in box 1, after a minute allow pairs to share with each other. Solicit a few predictions from the class. Continue reading about how the porcupine attacks Brian. Ask the students to write four words down that could describe how Brian is feeling in box 2. Read about how Brian flings the hatchet against the wall and sparks fly. Ask the students to draw a prediction about why this is important or write a question they have in box 3. Read about Brian struggling to make fire. Have the students write a "This reminds me" sentence to extend their understanding and share with a partner. After this initial activity, students can be guided to fill-out the squares during a read-aloud or individual reading (you can give set guidelines such as Box 1 - Questions I have, Box 2 - Answers I found, Box 3 - Mental Picture, Box 4 -Written response. The instructions you give can be tailored to the active reading strategies you want to teach - the examples I gave with Hatchet or just one idea. A student who begins to picture, question, predict and respond to wil be one their way to strong comprehension. It should be brief and enjoyable, with the emphasis on enjoying the book. Lesson Plan for Bud, Not Buddy - Word Sort Wordsort template Objective: To activate or supply basic prior knowledge prior to reading Materials: copy of wordsort, copy of novel Instruct students that they will be reading the hilarious, sad, action packed Bud, Not Buddy but before they dive in the will try a little challenge. Ask the students to help classify the terms below into categories of setting, character, and key event. (these terms can be refreshed by giving examples from past shared stories) This can be done in pairs or as a small class. Sometimes a term can lend itself to more than one category, allow students to explain their thinking. When students are complete as them to write a five sentence prediction about the story and share it with the partner. After some class sharing and help from you in terms of pronunciation the class will go into reading with a grasp of key characters and setting and a hint of events to come (be judicious, don't give it all away just whet the appetite) You can easily develop this for any novel. |
