Finding the right online project for your classroom

Many educators have found online projects to provide outstanding educational benefits for students. But just what kind of projects are available out there? And how can I find the right project for my classroom? The resources on this page are intended to help address that question.

What kind of projects have teachers and students done? An organized listing

  • Virtual Architecture.
Judi Harris has written very thoughtfully about different kinds of online projects. Her particular emphasis is on the power of telecollaboration, or the educational benefits of having students and teachers working together across distances. These sorts of projects take more work both to organize and to complete, but they hold the promise of superior educational benefits. Please note that some of the projects she cites here are not ongoing--they serve as examples of what is possible.

What kind of projects are available

These are the three best sites that I have found for finding ongoing projects that you can join with your class. These sites will take some time to explore effectively, but it will be well worth it.

  • Global Schoolhouse--the leader in collaborative learning, says their website, and so they are. Don't miss the projects registry where educators register their online projects.
  • KIDLINK and KIDPROJ--Kidlink's list of projects is shorter, but they are of high quality. These projects seem tilted toward elementary classrooms, but you might think otherwise. Click on your preferred language, then visit the Teachers page to get started.
  • I*EARN--"I*EARN is a non-profit global network that enables young people to use the Internet and other new technologies to engage in collaborative educational projects that both enhance learning and make a difference in the world."
  • Educational Links from the Center for Improved Engineering and Science Education (CIESE).
Another source with many links to educational projects.
  • Epals
An excellent site for connecting students and classrooms.
